2009-10

The season of "Matador" proved to be another successful production by the Marching Defenders.  The Band continued to grow, and had the distinction of being the only Fayette County Public High School whose marching band grew in size from the previous season. The band performed well with the percussion section establishing itself as one of the finest in the state.  The band again qualified for State level competition and performed the finest show of the year at KMEA Quarterfinals.

The Fall Band Concert featured a fine performance by the Jazz Band playing standards in the rotunda.  The show then moved to the theatre where the Percussion Ensemble performed several pieces including a Brazilian Samba that brought the house down.  The Symphonic and Concert bands presented a well rehearsed and enjoyable show concluding with Take Me Home, an original work by Director of Bands, Shaun Owens.

Bryan Station again hosted the KMEA District 7 Honors Bands in late January. Taylor Chapman (marimba), Luke Francis (snare), James Guyton (trumpet) and Micah Tatum (bass clarinet) were selected and represented us in those ensembles.

Taylor Chapman (marimba & snare), Luke Francis (snare) and Micah Tatum (bass clarinet) advanced to the second round All-State Band Auditions.  Micah was selected 2nd chair in the All-State Concert Band and performed at the KMEA In-Service Conference in February.  Micah was selected to play with the UK Honors Wind Ensemble in February. Additionally, James Guyton (trumpet), Tyree Jones (clarinet) and Maddie Lee (Flute) were selected to perform in the Eastern Kentucky University Honors Band.

Snow days negatively effected the number of students participating in Solo & Ensemble Festival.  However, Bryan Station's Band was well represented by the following members:

Distinguished Solos: Taylor Chapman (I+), Micah Tatum, Chris Cutshaw (2), Oscar Maldonado

Distinguished Ensembles: Domonique White, Danielle Dailey, Jahon Brown, David Carmichael, Joshua Saylor, Kyle Wilson, Jacob Godbey (2), Clifford Austin (2), Chris Walters, Holly Hardwick, TC Sorrell, Stephen Waun

In April the select band traveled to Scott Co. HS for KMEA District Concert Festival.  The group performed Over There by George M. Cohan, arr. Shaun Owens, Of Dark Lords and Ancient Kings by Roland Barrett and Fall River Overture by Robert Sheldon.  They received a Distinguished rating.
