2011-12In 2011 the Bryan Station Band continued its growth. The Marching Defenders performed their show titled "Buccaneer." Music included Yablochko: Dance of the Russian Sailor and El Gatotriste by Chuck Mangione. The Robinson brothers played stirring solos and received great accolades for their performances. The band performed well and received a Distinguished rating at the Morehead State University Contest. The band again qualified for State level competition and performed the finest show of the year at KMEA Quarterfinals hosted at Bryan Station. The band took it's first overnight trip in many years and traveled to Chattanooga, TN for the USSBA Southern States Championships. The band had a tremendous show placing 2nd with a Distinguished rating and receiving best percussion. The Fall saw the return of the Bryan Station Band Area Concert after a 17 year hiatus. Combined Middle School bands in 6th, 7th and 8th grade performed in the gym along with the HS Jazz, Concert and Symphonic Bands. The evening concluded with a everyone performing America The Beautiful. Bryan Station again hosted the KMEA District 7 Honors Bands in January. Grant Knox (1st chair Euphonium), Stephen Waun (1st chair Bari Sax), Michael Robinson (Clarinet), Zachary Robinson (Trumpet), David Carmichael (Tuba) and Noela Botaka (Mallets) were selected and represented us in those ensembles. Michael Robinson and Zachary Robinson advanced to the second round All-State Band Auditions. Michael Robinson was selected Bari Sax in the All-State Jazz Band and performed at the KMEA In-Service Conference in February. The Robinson brothers were also selected to the University of Kentucky Honors Wind Ensemble. Grant Knox (1st chair Euphonium), Jake Margolies (1st Chair Alto Sax), Stephen Waun (1st Chair Bari Sax), Dustin Spiegel (Trumpet), Abby Schueler (Clarinet), Evan Martin (Trombone) and Oscar Maldonado (Oboe) were selected to perform in the Eastern Kentucky University Honors Band. Stepehen Waun performed "Summertime" for a Masterclass with Jazz @ Lincoln Center members Kenny Rampton and Walter Blanding Jr. Following the Honor Bands concert all the students attended the Jazz @ Lincoln Center Orchestra performance in the new EKU Performance Center. The Bryan Station HS Jazz Ensemble earned a Distinguished rating at the first ever KMEA Jazz Assessment.
