2019-20

2019 saw more changes at Bryan Station. Shaun Owens remained the Head Band Director in his 17th year at Bryan Station and 28th year with Fayette County Public Schools.  Calvin Schmieg accepted a position Clark Co., and the district chose to not fill the vacant Assistant Band Director position.  This was a significant disservice to our students. It negatively impacted the available educational opportunities that were offered to every other high school band in Lexington.

The halftime show featured music selected by the students from a dozen tunes offered for consideration.  They chose and performed September by Earth, Wind & Fire, Crazy In Love by Beyonce, Happy by Pharrell Williams and Poison by Bel Biv Devoe. The Marching Band also appeared in the Roots @ Heritage, BSHS Homecoming, Veterans Day and the Lexington Christmas Parades.

Symphonic Band chamber ensembles performed at the Station Arts Open House in September.

The Bryan Station Area Concert was held in our gym in November.  Bands from Bryan Station MS & Winburn MS performed along with our Jazz and Concert Bands.  Concert Band performed Air Patheique by Beethoven and Antares (Overture for Band) by Richard Saucedo.  The Jazz Band performed Splanky by Neal Hefti and Mission: Impossible Theme by Lalo Schifren.  We ended the concert with the combined Area Bands performing the Defender Fight Song.

Zach Henz (Clarinet) made it to the 2nd Round All-State auditions.

The Station Arts Gala occurred in December. The Band performed A Christmas Festival by Leroy Anderson.  The Jazz Band performed Frank Comstock's arrangement of All I Want For Christmas is My Two Front Teeth.

Frances Kilgore and Zach Oliver (Trumpets) were selected to the KMEA All-District Freshman Honor Band.

The UK Honors Band weekend was held the first weekend in February.  We had 5 students selected.  They were: Rebekah Dutton (Flute), Erin Kendall (Flute), Joshua Hocker (Bari Sax), Jacob Falconbury (Oboe) and Evelyn Real (Trombone).

Zach Henz (Clarinet) was selected to the KMEA All-District Symphonic Band. Evelyn Real (Trombone) was selected to the KMEA All-District Concert Band. The March performance was cancelled due to the virus pandemic.

Zach Henz (1st Chair Alto Sax) was selected to the KMEA All-District Jazz Band.

KMEA Solo & Ensemble Assessment was held at Lexington Catholic HS. The following were awarded:

Distinguished Ratings: Erin Kendall & Rebekah Dutton (Flute Duet), Zach Henz (Clarinet & Quartet), Zoe Frosty, Dylan Campbell, Jacob Falconbury (Clarinet Quartet), Austin Murray (Horn), Evelyn Real (Trombone).

Proficient Ratings: Austin Murray (Trumpet).

The Band hosted its 6th annual Jazz Dinner Dance in our cafeteria.  Dinner was catered by Fazoli's, and the evening featured silent auctions and performances by the the Jazz Combo, Concert Band and Jazz Band.

On Friday, March 13, All schools were closed due to the virus pandemic.  Teachers scrambled to create online content delivery and assessment.  On Monday, April 6 classes resumed via the internet or paper packets.  Students engaged in video class meetings and were responsible for practicing and submitting playing tests via Google Classroom or SmartMusic.

KMEA Large Ensemble Assessment at Frederick Douglass HS was cancelled.

After 17 years at Bryan Station High School, Mr. Owens stepped back and assumed duties teaching Band at Bryan Station Middle School.
